What to expect

Children begin the year with a topic all about Space. This covers lots of science and is complemented by a trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester. Children enjoy practical investigations about rockets where they look at forces alongside learning about the solar system. Children also study the work of Peter Thorpe - a pop artist who takes his inspiration from space. They also code space games using scratch for their Year 3 buddies to try out and, in PE, practice training like an astronaut. The topic ends with children writing job applications and taking part in mock interviews to be selected to go into space!

The second topic focuses on the Theatre - a hugely important part of our local area. Children track developments in theatre in our local area over time. Beginning with the Coventry mystery plays, moving through Shakespeare and changes to Tudor theatre and then "the world's greatest actress" - Ellen Terry. This ends with a backstage tour and a visit to a theatre. Alongside this, children build on their DT skills to create a theatre box with moving parts, create and perform dances based on musical theatre and perform together in music.

After Christmas, children study the topic of Evolution and ponder the question - why do some living things no longer exist? Children learn about the work of Darwin and Linnaeus as well as developing their understanding of living things. They visit the Oxford Museum of Natural History and the Pitt Rivers museum to look at the story of human life. In geography, children learn about biomes and climate zones around the world. This is completed by computing work on sorting information and art work where children develop their shading and hatching techniques to accurately reflect animals.

Children then study the Ancient Greeks, investigating the Trojan war and looking for the historical basis of the well-known story. This complements their learning in English where they study a version of the Odyssey.

Finally, in the summer term children rehearse their science knowledge and build on previous learning about the body by discovering the circulatory system and the digestive system. They also develop their knowledge of types of living thing by learning about viruses, bacteria and fungi - completing the disgusting but fascinating mould investigation!

Children then learn about our changing coastline which is brought to life in our residential to Torquay in Devon. They consider the pros and cons of protecting our coastline and why some areas of Britain have a greater problem with this.
